Anapana Sati: Meditation on Breathing

Anapana Sati: Meditation on Breathing by Ven. Mahathera Nauyane Ariyadhamma
Anapana sati, the meditation on in-and-out breathing, is the first subject of meditation expounded by the Buddha in the Maha Satipatthana Sutta, the Great Discourse on the Foundations of Mindfulness. The Buddha laid special stress on this meditation, for it is the gateway to enlightenment and Nibbana adopted by all the Buddhas of the past as the very basis for their attainment of Buddhahood. When the Blessed One sat at the foot of the Bodhi Tree and resolved not to rise until he had reached enlightenment, he took up anapana sati as his subject of meditation. On the basis of this, he attained the four jhanas, recollected his previous lives, fathomed the nature of samsara, aroused the succession of great insight knowledges, and at dawn, while 100,000 world systems trembled, he attained the limitless wisdom of a Fully Enlightened Buddha.

Let us then offer our veneration to the Blessed One, who became a peerless wor…

Be happy, don't be depressed

Image
In his Bengali book, Londone Swami Vivekananda, Mahendra Nath has given us an insight into Swamiji's inner world at this time:

You see, Swamiji said, at night I go to my room and lie down. I keep quiet for a while, and then within me so much ananda arises that I cannot stay lying down. I see the Blissful Mother. Men, animals, the sky and earth--all are saturated with bliss. I cannot lie down any longer; so I get up and dance in the middle of the room. That bliss can no longer be confined within my heart. The whole world becomes filled with it, as it were. Even as he said this, Swamiji began to dance like a child for a little while. Then he said with affection to those who were present, Be happy, don't be depressed; the Mother is everywhere; all will be filled with bliss!

Strength! Strength!! Strength!!!

Image
This is one question I put to every men..Are you strong? Do you feel strength? for I know it is the truth alone that gives strength.Strength is the medicine for the world's disease.

Be strong, my young friends, that is my advice to you. You will be nearer to heaven through football than through study of the Gita. These are bold words, but I have to say them, for I love you. I know where the shoe pinches. I have gained a little experience. You will understand the Gita better with your biceps, your muscles, a little stronger.

The remedy for weakness is not brooding over weakness, but thinking of strength. Teach men of strength that is already within them.

Ye are the children of God, the sharers of immortal bliss, holy and perfect beings. Ye divinities on earth sinners! It is a sin to call a man so; it is a standing libel on human nature. Come up, O lions, and shake off the delusion that you are sheep; you are souls immortal, spirits free blest and eternal.

Swami Premananda (Baburam Maharaj)

Image
Sri Ramakrishna used to refer to half a dozen among his disciples as Ishwarakotis and Nityasiddhas (divine and ever free souls), and to this select group belonged Swami Premananda.

Sri Ramakrishna would say, Baburam is pure to his very marrow. No impure thought can ever cross his mind and body. Owing to his absolute purity Baburam was deemed a fit attendant.

After the Master passed away Baburam joined the monastery at Baranagore. He along with his brother disciples embraced the monastic life and became Swami Premananda. Swami Vivekananda gave Baburam the name Premananda meaning bliss of divine love as he thought it conformed to the remark of the Master that Sri Radha herself, the Goddess of divine Love, was partially incarnated in him.

Swami Premananda had free access to the Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi. She was very fond of him, and Swami Premananda was very devoted to her. His face actually glowed when he spoke about the Holy Mother. He once said that those who different…

How should we live in this World?

Image
Look upon every man, woman, and every one as God.
You cannot help anyone, you can only serve; serve the children of the Lord, serve the Lord Himself, if you have the privilege.
Do service only as a worship. I should see God in the poor, and it is for my salvation that I go and worship them. The poor and the miserable are for our salvation, so that we may serve the Lord, coming in the shape of the diseased, coming in the shape of the lunatic, the leper, and the sinner!
Bold are my words; and let me repeat that it is the greatest privilege of our life that we are allowed to serve the Lord in all these shapes.
Give up the idea that by ruling over others you can do any good to them.
Bring all light into the world. Light, bring light! Let light come unto everyone; the task will not be finished till everyone has reached the Lord.
-Swami Vivekananda.

Surrender! Surrender!! Surrender!!!

Image
One day the Holy Mother said, "However much of Japa you do, however much of work you perform all is for nothing. If Mahamaya does not open the way, is anything possible for anyone? Oh bound soul! Surrender, surrender. Then alone will She take compassion on you and leave your path open." Saying this, she told an incident in the Master's life at Kamarpukur. "One day in the month of Jyeshta, there was a heavy rain one evening. The whole field was covered with water. The Master was going along the main road near Dompada wading in the water. There, seeing that many fish had accumulated, people were beating them to death with sticks. One fish kept going round and round the Master's feet. Noticing it, he said, 'Hey, do not kill this fish. It is going round my feet, surrendering itself to me. If anybody can, let him take this fish and set it free in the pond.' Then he himself set it free and came home and said, 'Ah, if anyone could surrender in this manner, …

How can we avoid suffering in this World?

Image
This is the one cause of misery: we are attached. We are being caught. Therefore says the Gita: "Work constantly. Work, but be not attached; be not caught".
Reserve unto yourself the power of detaching yourself from everything, however beloved, however much the soul might yearn for it, however great the pangs of misery you feel if you are going to leave it. Still, reserve the power of leaving it whenever you want.

Thoughts Of Swami Vivekananda

Image
Doing is very good, but that comes from thinking fill the brain, therefore, with high thoughts, highest ideals, place them day and night before you, and out of that will come great work.

The infinite future is before you, and you must always remember that each word, thought, and deed, lays up a store for you and that as the bad thoughts and bad works are ready to spring upon you like tigers, so also there is the inspiring hope that the good thoughts and good deeds are ready with the power of a hundred thousand angels to defend you always and for ever.

Mentally repeat, "Let all beings be happy; let all beings be peaceful; let all beings be blissful". The more you do that the better you will feel yourself. You will find at last that the easiest way to make ourselves healthy is to see that others are healthy, and the easiest way to make ourselves happy is to see that others are happy.

How to gain bhakti?

Image
One must chant without ceasing the name of the Lord and His glories.

And keep company of the holy one must frequently go to God's bhaktas, or sadhus.

One's mind does not fix itself on the Lord while living night and day in the midst of worldly activities and family life. Hence, one must go into solitude now and then to meditate on God. In the first stage it is very hard to fix the mind on the Lord unless one frequently goes into solitude.

When the plant is young, it needs a hedge around it. Without the hedge goats and cows eat it up.

The mind, the solitary corner and the forest are the places where you will meditate. And you will always have good thoughts in your mind. The Lord alone is real, i.e. the eternal substance, and all else is unreal, i.e. transitory. Discriminating thus, you will shake off attachment to the perishable things of the world.

-Sri Ramakrishna.
